FOUR TEMPERAMENTS

The four temperament theory︎︎︎ is a proto-psychological theory which suggests that there are four fundamental personality types: sanguine, choleric, melancholic, and phlegmatic. I attempted to visualize these four temperaments, which gives the audience an intuitive feeling of them. I tried different executions based on my idea. I didn’t set up any goals but let the processes  determine the final results.

“FOUR CLASSICAL ELEMENTS”
Classical elements typically refer to earth, water, air, fire, and (later) aether which were proposed to explain the nature and complexity of all matter in terms of simpler substances.

“FOUR TEMPERAMENTS”
The four temperament theory were coined by the Greek physician Aelius Galenus to describe the effect of these humors on human behavior. This idea is perhaps one of the oldest that looks like a theory of personality.

In order to give the audiences a more clear understanding of the four temperaments, I described each one of them in some simple and modern keywords, and color coded them based on the research.

“TEMPERMENTS LAYOUTS”
By understanding what the four fundamental temperaments are, I described each one of them in some simple and morden words, and color coded them based on the research. Then, I designed four type compositions for each temperament based on my understandings.

“TEMPERAMENTS INSTALLATION”
To achieve my goal of giving the audience an intuitive feeling of the four temperaments, I decided to launch type compostions in the format of installations. I designed the temperaments installations with some movements in order to make them more vivid for the audiences.

“CHOLERIC TATTOO”
Since the four temperaments are characteristics of people, I decided to use people’s own traits as the media to reveal four temperaments. I chose choleric as an example, and launch the type compostion as tattoo patterns. I believe it will give the audiences a more intuitionistic understanding of the choleric temperament.

“PHLEGMATIC OUTFIT”
Dressing style is another more intuitionistic media to show someone’s temperaments. I chose phlegmatic temperament as an example, and designed an outfit based on the phlegmatic installation. I dressed people in the outfit to represent people whose temperament is phlegmatic . I believe it will give the audiences a more intuitionistic understanding of the phlegmatic temperaments.

Balloon as material
Phlegmatic temperament is calm, easygoing. However, phlegmatic people often keeps emotions hidden so they tend to be avoid and sometimes fragile. Balloons have the similar traits, they are spheres, which provides a unharmful feeling but they are fragile.
