BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU

Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984)︎︎︎ is a dystopian social science fiction novel by George Orwell. Airstrip One, in the novel, is a province of a totalitarian superstate named Oceania that is ruled by the "Party" under the ideology of "Ingsoc" and the mysterious leader Big Brother. The Party persecutes individuality and independent thinking using the Thought Police and constant surveillance through Telescreens, cameras, and hidden microphones.

In order to satirize the surveillance of people through telescreens and the restriction of free-thinking under the rule of a totalitarian society, and even to critic the potential surveillance in modern society, I brand the city, Airstrip One, by creating a visual based on words that relate to surveillance and control in the novel. I want to give the audiences an experience of they are under surveillance living in such a totalitarian society.

“BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU FILTER”
To provide the audience an immersive experience that they are under surveillance. I made a filter by using the visuals I created to give the audiences a feeling that they are under surveillance through their phones.

“TWO MINUTES HATE”
The Two Minutes Hate︎︎︎ is the daily, public period during which members of the Outer Party of Oceania must watch a film depicting the enemies of the state, which allows the citizens of Oceania to vent their existential anguish and personal hatreds towards politically expedient enemies. I used the visuals I made to create the images of the Two Minutes Hate and the atmosphere of the city and its citizens.
